Abstract


A city might be one of human existence expressions that is most complex. It has meaning not only as the city itself, but mostly it has meanings that constructed from the life within it. The functional allocation of the architecture within a city might have special meanings and constructed from the life of its community. Mostly in traditional cities, those functional allocations have symbolic meanings. Proxemics observation is one of the methods that can be used to observe those symbolic meanings. This article is intended to observe traditional settlements by the proxemics point of view, which are Yong Ding in the Fujian, China; Mont St. Michel in France and Beijing.
